Along with two-thirds of the American public, I believe in capital punishment. I believe that there are some defendants who have earned the ultimate punishment our society has to offer by committing murder with aggravating circumstances present. I believe life is sacred. It cheapens the life of an innocent murder victim to say that society has no right to keep the murderer from ever killing again. In my view, society has not only the right, but the duty to act in self defense to protect the innocent.
Nevertheless, the value of the death penalty in our current system of justice is a limited one and should not be overstated. Because the death sentence is so rarely carried out, whatever deterrent value that exists is lessened in years of appeals and due process. Because of the unlimited power of Governors, judges, juries, and prosecutors to show mercy, the difference between those who receive the death penalty and those who do not is minimal. Finally, because the system allows it, the financial costs to state and local governments can be staggering.
In spite of these shortcomings, it is my view that pursuing a death sentence in appropriate cases is the right thing to do. There is no adequate and acceptable alternative. Life Without Parole does not eliminate the risk that the prisoner will murder a guard, a visitor, or another inmate, and we should not be compelled to take that risk. It is also not unheard of for inmates to escape from prison. The prisoner will not be eligible for parole until the next legislative session, when the parole laws can be changed. Considering that a defendant sentenced to "life imprisonment" across the country actually serves on the average less than 8 years in prison, it is a good bet that "life without parole" will not have the meaning intended as years go by. Even the most "law and order" legislators will begin to consider alternatives when the medical bills for geriatric care of prisoners start rolling in.
No system of justice can produce results which are 100% certain all the time. Mistakes will be made in any system which relies upon human testimony for proof. We should be vigilant to uncover and avoid such mistakes. Our system of justice rightfully demands a higher standard for death penalty cases. However, the risk of making a mistake with the extraordinary due process applied in death penalty cases is very small, and there is no credible evidence to show that any innocent persons have been executed at least since the death penalty was reactivated in 1976. The 100+ death row inmates "innocent", "exonerated" and released, as trumpeted by anti-death penalty activists, is a fraud. The actual number of factually innocent released death row inmates is closer to 40, and in any event should be considered in context of over 7,000 death sentences handed down since 1973. It stands as the most accurate judgment/sentence in any system of justice ever created. The inevitability of a mistake should not serve as grounds to eliminate the death penalty any more than the risk of having a fatal wreck should make automobiles illegal. At the same time, we should never ignore the risks of allowing the inmate to kill again.
Our "system" was created by legislators and judges. In order for the death penalty to remain a meaningful and effective punishment, those same legislators and judges need to make necessary changes to reflect the will of the people in a democratic society.

We follow the news here at my home and ever since your child became missing, you are in my thoughts in prayers here in Fairchance,Pa. Your daughter was beautiful and no parent should have to suffer this kind of pain. No child should ever have to endure such pain. God Bless you all. Close

Our little angel / Sarah (None)
This may seem a bit strange, but here goes. Around October of 2006 we adopted a cat from a rescue agency. He was very shy but loving. We were told that his name was Gabriel. When we asked how he got his name, we were told that rescue workers found him while they were looking for Gabriella and he wouldn't leave the area, so they eventually picked him up and took him to the rescue agency. I saw a story on the news this week and I've been deciding if it would be appropriate to write and send you a picture of him or not. I hope that it is ok. He is our little angel, and I truely believe that he was staying in the area because of your little angel. He is still scared of adults sometimes, but he is very protective of young children. He'll stay up all day and night following my 3 year old step son around. I hope that maybe you can find the smallest bit of comfort in this! He's standing on the keyboard as I type this right now! As we sit and hope we can start to have enough strength to get through the next couple of weeks. We know you will be with us and that you love us very much. I just want you to know that no matter what we are doing you are always a part of it and are always thought about. Spring is here almost summer and I know how much you loved this time of the year, and everytime I see a butterfly or just walk outside and look up to the sky I know you are here with us. It might seem like almost 2 years to everyone but the people that know you it seems like yesterday and I want you to know that I will never forget you and will always love, miss and think about you always. Please help mom and dad the next couple of weeks I know I haven't really talked with mom for awhile but she nows I think of her often and I do miss talking with her. It is just so hard to call there when you answered the phone all the time. So I just wanted you to know you are loved and miss and hought of often and forever. Love, Aunt Dora

This is just a stranger speaking, but I feel as if I've known Gabrielle Bechen since the beginning of time. I found out about her because one of my Pennsylvanian friend's last name caught my eye in a Google search. I read the article and was shocked to learn that his friend, Gabrielle, was no longer with him. I can't say that I understand completely how you feel, but I know a little. I have lost loved ones suddenly too. I just wanted the Bechen family and all those that knew Gabrielle to know that I may be a stranger, but I care deeply about her. This website moved me, and inspired me to still remember my lost ones, and not just push them into the closet of forgotten at the back of my memory. I want to thank the creators of this page and the contributors. Again, this is just a stranger speaking. --Pia Close

What a beautiful girl / Rachel (Passerby)
What a beautiful page you have created for such a beautifu little girl. Her pictures show how much fun and free spirited she must have been! She seems like the perfect daughter and big sister. My mother, from delaware, was part of the search and rescue team looking for Gabby. I remember how distraught she was and now i understand how she was so connected by a simple picture. Gabby's smile and pretty sparkling eyes elaborate what an amazing person she must have been. You can't help but want to smile along with her silly faces and poses. I wish with all my heart this never would have happened, and can't imagine the unbearable pain you must continue to go through. I am so sorry. I just wanted to let you know her smile lifted my spirits and brought a smile to my face. Thank you Gabby! Good luck, and lots of strength, throughout the upcoming trial. Close
